Cruising with KRS-One
Kris Moyes is the big pimpin little brother of rock’n’roll superstar Kim Moyes, he of The Presets fame. Instead of going down the same path as his older sibling and playing music, Kris instead chose a similarly creative path and went into film. Like his brother though he is a super talented [and very attractive] vegemite, and is currently reveling in collaborating with Kim working on a video for Are You The One?, off Beams, The Presets debut album.

What do you do?
Ah, the direct approach. I’m a director working in both animation and live video.

What are you doing today?
I’m up to my armpits in pixels making a great new clip for the next Presets single “Are You The One?”.

How did you end up doing this video thing? Brief rundown on education, aspirations, projects you've done.
Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a forensic pathologist. I’ve always been curious and wanted to relate to society. As a kid I’d pull apart my mum’s stereo and tv and reassemble them before she got back from work. I’d have these crazy dreams about satellite dishes communicating with galaxies. Certainly there is a correlation to this and what I do now. I’ve directed a modest number of music videos and commercials. More recently for The Cops “Wallet Puffer Smokes Keys”, SPOD “Totally Rad” and a Harpers Bazaar cinema commercial.

What has been the most satisfying project you've worked on so far?
The Presets website was fun, we were allowed to do pretty much whatever we wanted. Apart from that it’ll have to be this clip. Since the idea was agreed upon, I’ve been pretty free creatively. We just had an hilarious day shoot with Denson Baker, Natasha Severino, Andrew Liversidge and Mick Bruzzese. Even had Daniel Johns pop his head in. It’s great to be working with such lovely, talented people.

What kind of projects do you want to be working on in 5 years time?
That’s a good one. I have a lot of ideas but that’s kinda hard to talk about. I’d like to still be making music videos in 5 years. I’d be into doing some more commercials because the pay is good. Maybe branch out into feature-length film work. At some point I plan to make a movie about a crew in the process of filming a re-make of 1987’s “Master’s of the Universe” starring Craig McLaughlan and Dolph Lundgren. I’ve been developing an idea about a guy recovering from an accident who slowly turns into Richard Pryor. I’m writing a play about both sides of the brain, which is different………It’s hard to say what I want to be doing in 5 years. I’d prefer not to know. I think I like not knowing for the same reason I like Christopher Walken. He doesn't care how things are supposed to be done. He just invents as he goes along. And the results of that kind of living are beautiful and unorthodox. I hope whatever I’m making years from now is going to justify that.

Who do you admire in the world of film and video?
Sir. Stanley Kubrick………..the obvious choices, Gondry, Cunningham, Jonze…………but I generally don’t like a lot of film and video.

How was Kim as a child?
Kim was really shy. I think early on he got some sort of a self-destructive ball rolling. I think from the beginning there's been something off-centre: the way he looks, the paleness, a kind of exoticness.

How do you like working with him on things?
I love it. They say that everybody gets dealt a hand, and it has to do with how you play it. I got dealt a good hand. I think I played it very well.

Can you describe the video for Are You The One? and how it was made?
That’s a good question. It’s Frankie Goes To Hollywood meets The Predator on acid. It’s beyond 1984, beyond 2001, beyond love, beyond death. Sorry if that sounds like a film pitch. I don’t want to ruin the surprise. The clip is made using a technique I developed. I’m happy it hasn’t been done before.

Can you recommend 5 movies people should see?
I imagine the people likely to read this would have already seen them. So here is a list they may or may not have seen:

1.Les Enfants du paradis (Children of Paradise)
2.Katok i skripka (The Steamroller and the Violin)
3.Orphée
4.Stand By Me
5.The Squid and The Whale
and, and, and
6.Mr. T’s Be Somebody or Be Somebody’s Fool!
