Sydney Post Punk Band #3: No Night Sweats
"Ironic Lounge music before such a thing was ever thought popular."
After his previous band, Wild West, had started to dissolve Phil Turnbull began to experiment with a 4 track reel to reel and it was this humble piece of technology that inspired the creation of No Night Sweats, a band that allowed Phil and Patrick Gibson to join forces and challenge the conventions of live performance.
The accepted formula for a band was cast aside, as No Night Sweats would perform live without instruments. Instead its members used cassette players to back their vocal exploits, often singing from within the crowd or on top of teetering tabletops at venues and homes around Sydney.
Their openly experimental nature allowed No Night Sweats to largely improvise songs, cracking jokes and quoting from a variety of poets and artists throughout as audiences made up of close friends looked on in awe.
