Parisian
prince of icy class Colder presents his second suite of electronic
lullabies, Heat. Heat is a peerless collection of electro/acoustic
songs, combining elements of electro, dub, noise, and elegant
pop, all coated in a dense, smoky haze of sophistication and
restraint that could only have come from France.
Marc
Nguyen Tan released his first album, Again, under the Colder
moniker last year, drawing favourable comparisons with compatriots
Air and Daft Punk, as well as the timeless class of Kraftwerk,
Can and Joy Division. The album garnered Album Of The Week reviews
in The Sunday Times and the NME and Album Of The Month in Jockey
Slut, as well as earning the tick of approval from influential
publications like Rolling Stone, Tokion, XLR8R, URB and many
more.
With
the last year spent touring to support the release of Again in
the US, UK, Europe and of course Australia, Marc started writing
songs for the new album, inspired more by a sense of love and
loss than the unconditional crazy love which was the motivation
behind Again. The result is Heat. Still unmistakably Colder,
complete with the dark grooves and shimmery textures that made
Again so stunning, Heat draws on a more diverse range of influences,
with his trademark robotic digifunk evolving into a more pulsing,
upbeat and varied beast. Methodical, but less linear, and more
emotive than ever before, Heat’s strength is that it doesn’t
try to tap into any particular vogue. It sounds like Colder,
nothing else.
The
first track to be taken off Heat is Wrong Baby, a possible dancefloor
stalker of dark/light opposites. With it’s gloomy, stiff
bass and drum intro, and contrasting shooting star synth melody,
Wrong Baby is the perfect introduction to that rare thing – a
sophomore album that surpasses a brilliant debut.
