Crate Minds: Mitch Beige Brown

crates

We asked Sydney-based designer Mitch Beige Brown to dig deep into his crate of vinyl and with his ever-artistic eye, pick the five sleeves that meant something to him.

Amon Duul II - Only Human (1979)
Design: F. Jurgen Rogner

"Not a fan of the typography on this cover, but I love the image. Would have loved to see it without any type at all, really. Never underestimate the power of a strong image!"

mitch3
Stomu Yamashta - Raindog (1975)
Design: Eckford Stimpson
Photography: Monty Coles

"A minimal composition of dynamic script, with an image that's halfway between poignant and exuberant - reflects Yamashta's spacey percussive sound perfectly. I can sit and stare at his face all day long."

mitch4
Liars - They Were Wrong So We Drowned (2004)
Cover Artwork: Beate Schlingelhoff-Gross
Insides: Angus Andrew/Liars

"At first sight the embroidery is ugly; it's unrecognisable, messy and primitive - it requires alot of attention to understand what's going on, which I appreciate. It also perfectly accompanies the dark, explosive sound and which-hunt narrative of the album."

mitch5
Paul & Linda McCartney - RAM (1971)
Artwork: Paul & Linda McCartney

"Aside from being a great album, RAM is a sweet package, lovingly and earnestly produced by Paul & Linda. From the mixed-media collage work, to the first-name-only crediting, the album has a good energy.

mitch2
Focus - Moving Waves (1971)
Artwork: Terence Ibbott

"My Dad put me onto these guys, and when I first heard that sharp guitar riff and Thijs Van Leer's yodelling on "Hocus Pocus", I flipped out. There's also something so hilarious about bodgy photo-blends before the days of Photoshop, especially when contemporary web artists strive for this kind of irony in their gifs and images today."
