From the distinctively Evan-esque sound of the opening track "Repeat" to the infectiously poppy "Waking Up" (the first radio single) and the melancholy "All My Life", "Baby I'm Bored" is a refreshing reminder of the talent that lies within Evan Dando. Evan enlisted many old friends and collaborators in the making of Baby Im Bored, including Ben Lee, who contributed two songs to the album; Howe Gelb, John Convertino and Joey Burns of Giant Sand and Calexico, former Spacehog vocalist Royston Langdon and one-time Come/Codeine guitarist Chris Brokaw. Also in the mix, is Los Angeles-based composer Jon Brion, best known for his collaborations with Aimee Mann on the scores for Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love, who produced and co-wrote five of these tracks with Evan, along with Lemonheads and Pavement producer-engineer Bryce Goggin who worked on five others. Evan recently explained, "I've been working with Howe and John and and Joey for a real long time. The same goes for Ben Lee. I met Jon Brion in 2000 and we just hit it off. We wrote one of the songs, "It Looks Like You" in twenty minutes. He's a musical powerhouse." When asked about what he's been up to in the time between the Lemonheads final studio album, Car Button Cloth, and this new disc, Evan said something about going on the road with Enya (he didn't) and getting married (he did). But time, as Einstein once proved, can be a relative thing. As Evan put it, "Gee - seven years can go by in fifteen minutes." We can tell you Evan Dando released a double cd "Live At The Brattle Theatre / Griffith Sunset ep" in 2001 and played shows across Australia in support. We can also tell you for sure that Evan has been intermittently touring the U.S. and the U.K. as a solo act throughout the last year and that the critical buzz has been resoundingly enthusiastic. After hearing Evan perform "All My Life", NME reviewer Greg Heller declared that this new tune "was further proof positive that Dando's finest hours, musically at least, may be yet to come." Look for Evan to be back on the road to 2003 to support this new release. Baby Im Bored may have been a long time coming, but rest assured - it will tell you a lot more about where he's been . And once you've listened, we're sure you'll simply be eager to know where he's heading next. |
