Neneh Cherry has been remixed by the cream of the crop over her lengthy career, with the likes of Massive Attack, Kevin Saunderson, Masters At Work, Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, Air and Fourtet all jumping at the opportunity to reinterpret her wonder. Falcon & Fabian had a secret weapon on their chill 90s breakbeat take on 'Buddy X' - a rare verse from none other than Biggie Smalls in one of his earliest features. Way to trump the rest. Hoping Neneh and her band RocketNumberNine play 'Buddy X' amongst the classics at FOR Festival, as the sun sets over the Croatian island of Hvar.
Kelis' Food finds the incredible voice return to the humble beginnings that Got Your Money and Kaleidoscope deservedly fast tracked. The Le Cordon Bleu graduate's cuisine-themed 6th album was recorded with Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio, released by iconic indie Ninja Tune and launched with a pop-up food truck at SXSW, which dolled out duck confit sliders and jerk ribs. Deliciously rich with vulnerable vocals, live horns, gospel organ and trip hop electronics, Food has the lingering presence of a classic soul and funk record, maintaining a modern touch. Ahead of her three date Australian tour, Kelis sent through a list of inspiring disco, lounge and RnB which we've jazzed into a running mixtape. She was kind enough to share some of her studio and kitchen experiences in our interview too.
Vampire Weekend's bass-wielding Chris Baio has a musical double life, making melancholic dance music under the moniker Baio. His 2013 EP, Mira, leads with the title track - a 6 minute house jammer that is sonically continents away from his work in his Grammy Award-winning band.
Baio will be opening for our dudes Movement at their FOR warm-up show at the Ace Hotel in London on June 16th, and he'll also be joining Movement, and many others including Neneh Cherry, Kelela, Mark Ronson, and Klaxons at FOR Festival this June 19th-22nd. Tickets and more info here.
Cooked in the same kitchen as the fantastic and long running PIG magazine, Italian publication Alla Carta is a bi-annual of extended conversations with creative types around a table and a plate of food. Rather than being about food itself, the discussions revolve mostly around the people eating it, and in previous issues those have included the likes of Italian design titan Cristiano Toraldo di Francia of Superstudio, French fashion maverick Christophe Lemaire, photographer Marco Glaviano and Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky. The elegantly set magazine also includes recipes and tips from folks in the know, and dazzling photography from some of Europe's finest, all with the delicate balance of technique and flair you might expect from a learned Italian chef. Buon appetito.
Just remembered this happened! Psychemagik, the masters of soundtracking tropical paradises and lunar escapes, remixed LA sisters HAIM's undeniable anthem 'Falling'. What a coincidence that both acts will be playing our 4 day music experience FOR Festival, on the idyllic island of Hvar, Croatia. Buy tickets here and celebrate your greatest decision by revisiting Psychemagik's stellar Modcast.
Back in 2003, we toured Liars with Yeah Yeah Yeahs off the back of their seminal debut 'They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top'. Since then, the LA art-ensemble have continued to deviate from our expectations across the six records - story albums that explore witchcraft, wrestling with drums spirits, living in the city of angels and recording with Daniel Miller - before arriving at the pummelling industrial pop of 'Mess'. These efforts have always been communicated with progressively techy album campaigns, bold videos and compelling artwork.
Ahead of their Modulations show with HTRK at Carriageworks on Friday June 6 (tickets available here), frontman Angus Andrew has prepared a mixtape for your walkman. Press play and read on as we discuss their tendency to make such visceral albums, film and his connection to Australia.
Hamburg house music don Tensnake holds the lofty honour of being the only artist to have been on the bill for both the 1st and 2nd edition of the FOR Festival (ok so Nicolas Jaar is returning but this time as one half of Darkside). In recent years he's released some of the biggest tunes in house music that deftly tread the fine but beautiful line between the credible and the commercial, like the infallible 'Coma Cat', 'Something About You' and 'See Right Through'. Our love for Marco Niemerski though started with this moving cut from his outstanding release on Running Back in 2009. Simultaneously chugging and touching, it's tears of ecstasy all over the dancefloor. We can't wait to have Tensnake back on the island.
With the mix comes a hint at what's in store for 2014 - new music from the duo that brought you massive hits Way Back Home, Sunlight and Shooting Stars.
As part of Modulations, Porteño will host a showcase of their favourite record label - LA's iconic rock n roll and rockabilly collective Wild Records - on Monday 9 June. Recently the subject of international film festival standout 'Los Wild Ones', Wild Records is a talent hot bed, predominately of young Hispanic musicians, with an uncompromising aesthetic that carries the torch from the original rockabilly legends. The close-knit roster is fathered by Irishman Reb Kennedy who we initially invited to contribute a modcast. Acknowledging that he's a purist who is extremely reluctant to embrace the digital age, we quickly realised that this Q&A would be a more accurate translation of his ideas and the true Wild culture.
Fort Romeau, aka Londoner Mike Greene, has reverent love for house that finds him eschewing the moody attitude many of his contemporaries share in favour of warmth and emotion. After touring the world as the keyboardist in La Roux's band, Fort Romeau has released his soulful, gleaming productions on the celebrated 100% Silk imprint and more recently on Ghostly International.
A DJ with a deep respect for the craft, he couldn't be a better fit for the balmy Adriatic nights at next month's FOR Festival.
