Concluding with the newly released 'I Never Learn', Lykke Li's album trilogy has been like a series of open books, earnestly expressing the intense period of being a woman in her 20s. These melancholic admissions are told through incredibly gifted song-craft. Contributing this heart wrenching, nostalgic and epic 26 song playlist, the Swedish artist seems to reveal even more about her emotional makeup and experiences. The matured collection features unexpected cuts from some of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century and introduces a few new comers. Read on as we discuss the importance of the album format, transcendental mediation and her acting roles. 'I Never Learn' is now available worldwide via her online store.
This playlist really sticks out as it contains a lot of uncommon tracks from recognised career artists including selections from Emmylou Harris' 18th album and 2007 Bryan Ferry. Do you see yourself spending the rest of your life making and playing music as these artists have?
One can only dream that I continue to be as inspired and prolific as these artists have been. You never know what lies ahead so you have to catch the fire while you can.
If you weren't as talented as you thankfully are, what would be your alternate line of work?
I'm really into neuroscience, homeopathy and poetry so hopefully something in that realm.
The album format seems very important to you. Why? Is this something you will continue to preserve beyond the newly completed trilogy?
It was absolutely necessary for my survival as a woman, I had to get rid of my painful youth in order to step into the light as a woman. I am now happier and stronger then ever. Ready for any challenge that may arise. And so inspired to make music again!
You're a devotee to transcendental meditation after being introduced to the practice by David Lynch. What impact has this had on your music?
It has put me in touch with my deepest feelings and out of it a crystal clear vision has arrived. It has also made me move faster between A and B.
Keeping company with some great directors, has anyone presented the opportunity to score a film?
Yes, I've just been so busy making my records but really looking forward to that in the future. It will also allow me to be at home more which would be a wonderful healing thing.
Has performing on stage and appearing in music videos prepared you for your acting roles or is this a completely different beast?
It has prepared me some but not really as I am in complete control and directing myself in my videos. If I'm starring in someone else's film I need to become their puppet which is a little hard for a control freak like me.
What are some of your favourite films?
Paris, Texas. Deerhunter. Opening Night. Last Tango in Paris.
