Having riffed heavily on Canyons' involvement in 100 Million Nights, it's time to flip the coin and focus on Daniel Boyd whose visual narrative consumes the show's three giant screens and gave inspiration to Canyons' score. An acclaimed Sydney artist with pieces held by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, MCA, Sydney and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Boyd's work questions the romantic notions that surround the birth of Australia.
Ahead of next Thursday's Melbourne Music Week extravaganza, we meet the man behind the dot, soundtracked by an audio self-portrait of sorts.
What was it about Canyons' music that prompted you to approach them for 100 Million Nights
We've actually worked on two occasions before 100MN. I asked them if they wanted to score my first (A Darker Shade of Dark) and second (History is Made at Night) video works. I really liked the way their music has so little to contain it, the fluid nature of their sound and the swirling layered rhythms just seemed to compliment the colour rhythms of the video art.
Has music been important or influential in your life?
Yes. I listen to music in the studio to keep me sane, otherwise I overanalyse life.
Whereabouts in Australia is your family from? Are either of your parents artists?
Cairns. No one in my family is an artist, it took a lot to convince my parents that making art was legit.
The Captain Cook series launched your art career. What inspired this work and what continues to inspire you?
The history taught in Australia is biased to support the way the country was established on lies. I wanted to understand how contemporary Australian society engaged with icons of colonialism, such as Captain Cook. I wanted to add to a dialogue that was about post-colonialism here in Australia.
You've submitted a few images from the Natural History Museum in London where you completed a residency. Can you please write captions for these?
They are Meteorites from the Moon and Mars. Mars is in the perspex and NWA LUN is the moon. I held them both and was a bridge between the two! Transcending time and space.
The last photo is a meteorite that formed before the Earth formed.
