Modcast #185: Tiger & Woods - Too(L) Late for Summer Fitness Mix

Enigmatic DJ/production duo Tiger & Woods represent Italy at next week's international gathering at FOR Festival in Hvar, Croatia. They'll be soundtracking the epicurean lifestyle with their own brand of boogie, house and compressed funk, looping vaguely familiar disco samples and backbone strapping baselines live. This new modcast, entitled "Too(L) Late for Summer Fitness Mix", is our training program. Convert about their identity, rare interview subjects Larry Tiger and David Woods even participated in a shotgun Q&A. Start pumping those muscles.

It feels like you have a unique approach to music making, what is the process of making a Tiger & Woods track?

The process is often made by an obsessive search of the right loop. Every song has a little moment and you wish it would have last longer, that's exactly what we are looking for. Most of the times we work on a sample, we chop it and give it a new groove, a new shape and then we try to replace as many elements as possible. We pay a lot of attention to the details and the micro-variations, which in studio can be boring but it's extremely effective on the dancefloor. If you are next door we bet it sounds pretty much the same for hours!

How much of a role does record shopping play in this process?

It's more like record digging than proper shopping. Here the second hand shops are gold mines!

Are there particular elements or qualities you're drawn to when sourcing a loop or sample?

The main thing is the groove. It can be anything really. It's all about how rhythmical it sounds, but for this reason, we probably tend to love a good bass line more, possibly synthetic bass. When it doesn't work as it is, we twist the original to a degree where unexpected element bits become the new groove leader. As for the source it has to be always something we love or we feel somehow attached to.

What does the image of the tiger represent to you?

It replaced our physical images and most of all it incapsulated the entire idea of Tiger & Woods - dance music to dance to, as simple as that! Nothing else than a stamp on a record and no other infos to let the focus be 100% on music (It's even wrong! It's not a tiger! Like a proper bootleg back in the days!)

Do you guys workout? The music lends itself wonderfully to such vigorous activity, and you've also done fitness-themed mixes, so what's your routine?

It involves pretty much only walking to the studio! And going up and down to the living room.
