Sharooz reboots our Club Modcast series with this superb mix of dancefloor incubators. The producer just announced he'll be launching his newly released 'Astre' EP with two special Club Mod parties at the Waiting Room in London on Thursday October 2 (tickets and info here) and Razzmatazz in Barcelona on Friday October 10. He'll be joined by fellow Club Mod artist Baio in both cities. Born to make and play music, we get to know a bit more about Sharooz's story in the Q&A below.
What was the inspiration behind the mix?
I'm trying to present club tracks that aren't obvious in how they are structured but will still get a dancefloor going. I'm in a bit of grey area as far as genres are concerned - the mix switches from techno to classic electro and into 120bpm house and what Beatport might call 'indie-dance'.
What's your earliest memories of music?
Tears for Fears, The Cars, David Frank, Chaka Khan, Prince - late 80s Radio 1 and MTV basically. I remember hearing all those crazy gated reverbed snares and always wondering how those sounds were made. Stock Aitken and Waterman were huge back then and like most kids I was obsessed with their sounds. Everyone wanted a synth to make those cheesy brass sounds and a drum machine to make those tom fills.
What led you into music production?
I had a Boss drum machine, Atari ST with Midi ports and a Yamaha keyboard. For about a year I was obsessed with being able to program the keyboard with the computer. It just grew from that. I went through a period of playing in various bands in my hometown of Belfast. My drummer would always fail to show up so I kinda became my own band. Then when I was 18 I went to college and discovered dance music properly. I got a Roland MC303 with an Akai sampler and just started from there.
You've been DJing for a little while now, how would you say your style has changed over the years?
Around 2008 when I was first starting, I was playing the typical club 'electro' style - Ed Banger, Boys Noize, Turbo etc - that sound evaporated quite quickly and since then I'm fluctuating between slower techno, house and the classic electro sound. Right now my sets have a lot of house in them. I'll even go into G-House if I'm playing in the US but stick more to techno if I'm in Europe.
What's your favourite place to play?
I love Avalon in Los Angeles. Also Hard, Gary Richards' festival out in LA is amazing too - the response this year was incredible. I also regularly play an after hours in Boston called Rise which is a small, incredible room with loads of history and atmosphere. Always an amazing time.
What are the ingredients for your ultimate party?
Sound and ambience of the room are everything. Whether it's a room for 20 or 2000 people. A well-tuned sound system. A proper warm-up DJ. Failing that vodka and girls and just see what happens haha.
Who was the last DJ you saw that really knocked your socks off?
Tchami. Admittedly it's quite big room festival music. But done in a quirky, fun, way with loads of old rnb acappelas thrown in. Seth Troxler never fails to disappoint either. He's one of the few newer DJs who still has that journey vibe rather than just playing 200 tracks in one hour off a laptop.
