Modcast #169: Daniel Boyd

Having riffed heavily on Canyons' involvement in 100 Million Nights, it's time to flip the coin and focus on Daniel Boyd whose visual narrative consumes the show's three giant screens and gave inspiration to Canyons' score. An acclaimed Sydney artist with pieces held by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, MCA, Sydney and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Boyd's work questions the romantic notions that surround the birth of Australia.

Ahead of next Thursday's Melbourne Music Week extravaganza, we meet the man behind the dot, soundtracked by an audio self-portrait of sorts.

Modcast #168: Shining Bird

We're now only two weeks away from our Melbourne Music Week shake up of The Residence.

Shimmering coastal dream pop 5-piece Shining Bird will open the proceedings, laying down critical vibe foundations for 100 Million Nights, Andras Fox, Standish/Carlyon and Club Mod DJs. The Austinmer group are part of a growing national scene embracing Australiana. Watch them in their natural habitat in the Keep Warm video, the latest single to be lifted off Leisure Coast.

We sit down with band member Russell Webster below, discussing lyrical inspiration, Keithy George and Australian cinema.

Modcast #167: Andras Fox

The human touch with Andras Fox whose spirit fingers orchestrate elevating modern soul for outdoor chilling. Some of the best music going around right now. Andras will perform his tape worn boogie at our Melbourne Music Week party at The Residence, alongside 100 Million Nights, Standish/Carlyon, Shining Bird and Club Mod DJs. Ahead of the action we spent some quality time with the Dam-Funk endorsed producer, talking about his love of cassettes, FM radio and VHS, soundtracked by some deeply resonating house music.

Modcast #166: Greg Wilson Live @ Love & Death, Belfast

From one legend to the next, we present an hour set with The Reel Thing Greg Wilson, recorded live at Love & Death in Belfast. The cornerstone of UK dance music, Wilson was a former Hacienda resident, became the first DJ to mix live on British TV and was instrumental in breaking in the "electro-funk" post-disco sound of New York. Jive to his arresting dubbed out groove, constructed with his trusty old Revox B77 reel-to-reel tape machine.

Modcast #165: Psychemagik's Summer of Love

Masters of soundtracking tropical paradises and lunar escapes, Psychemagik have gained underground and overground notoriety through their globally embraced production work, remixes of Haim, Cutters Records signing Kauf, Bryan Ferry and Azari & III, the Healin' Feelin' edits and multi-directional DJ sets. Following a series of cultish mixtapes that found them digging through dusty bins like coalminers, the duo have embraced more contemporary electronics for us all in the name of love.

The party favourites return down under this December (dates after our Q&A below) and are soon releasing a weirdo disco edits LP with killer contributions from former Modcast stars Mike Simonetti, Eric Duncan and Jacques Renault.

Modcast #164: World's End Press

World's End Press pop the cork in celebration of their self-titled debut album. Produced by Tim Goldsworthy (Hercules & Love Affair, Massive Attack, The Rapture), the ambitious one hour journey worms through uplifting house driven bangers, glassy-eyed 5am club excursions and stadium-sized singles. Brilliantly complemented by this vibing mixtape.

The band wheel their manic live disco around the country in support of the release, including a Melbourne launch at the Corner Hotel on December 6 with Movement. Hometown fans can also see them play a free show tomorrow night (October 11, 7pm) at Topman's Chapel Street store for Friday Night Live.

Read on as we discuss their kinship with Cut Copy, Prince and drunk poetry.

Modcast #163: Francis Inferno Orchestra

Jump into the flames of Francis Inferno Orchestra, the Melbourne producer who's marked his turf as a deep sample-house wonder from down under. His finest has been championed by the likes of Mark E, 6th Borough Project, The Revenge and Jacques Renault and endorsed with top shelf remixes from Soul Clap and Linkwood. We're still praising him for the work he did remixing Softwar for Club Mod, turning Believe into a bewitching spell of late night tension.

Plug in the headphones and surrender to this quality mixtape. Read on for our Q&A with the charmer, discussing his Northern Hemisphere relocation, 90s hip hop and his insatiable appetite for KFC.

Modcast #162: Movement

Movement's Sean, Jessie and Lewis round off a crazy release week with a cruisy mixtape of the greatest soul vocalists and chill productions. Shedding some light on their signature style of brooding night music, it reveals much about these illusive personalities (we drill them with a Q&A below) while doubling as a golden companion piece to their latest and greatest tune 'Us'. Soak it up!

The guys are warming up for their Sydney single launch on Saturday 26th October with interstate dates to follow. Watch this space...

Modcast #161: Shine 2009

Kick back in the Eurozone with Shine 2009's Sami Suova as he flicks through a timeless selection of 90s drum'n'bass, trip hop and r'n'b mixed with modern sensations. Part nostalgia session, part mining boom of neglected hits, 100% taste.

The Finnish duo's stellar Our Nation album drops October 15 on Cascine in North America and Modular internationally. We sit down with the band's smooth and confidently cool voice below to discus their fateful meeting and collaboration with Paula Abdul.

Club Modcast #011: Naysayer + Gilsun

Naysayer + Gilsun, aka Luke Neher and Sam Gill, step up to the plate with a heavy club fix that encapsulates how the Melbourne duo achieved local hero status, having played Boiler Room and alongside Jamie XX.

The set is built around their two original productions All That Good Work and Blue, which Club Mod packaged with Eliphino and John Roberts remixes and released to the world this week. Fill the void in your life and pick the EP up thru i-tunes and Beatport.

We had a chat to the guys about their multimedia DJ show NGTV and favourite films below.
