Recommends: Modular Best of 2013

Recommends: Modular Best of 2013

Well not quite a best of. That would be an impossible task having released music from Tame Impala, Young Dreams, The Presets, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cut Copy, Movement, Darkside, Beni, Pond, Shine 2009, CEO and Canyons as well as Club Mod artists Softwar, wordlife, Naysayer + Gilsun, Villa, SymbolOne and Roland Tings. What a wild ride.

Here we opt out of picking favourites and instead list a selection of videos, remixes, cover versions and modcasts that might have gone unnoticed. Maximum holiday stimulation.

VIDEOS

PINK GIN - TELEPHONE FUNK

Canyons' tribal riddum as visualised by "Pinchy Don", the alias of Tom Kuntz who directed Frontier Psychiatrist and MGMT's Life Is A Lie.

YOUNG DREAMS, A PORTRAIT

Kristoffer Borgli captures the dream-pop 5-piece's wonderfully weird Norwegian humour before they perform three songs on top of a building in their native Bergen (to the complaint of neighbours).

MOVEMENT - US

Dave Ma explores themes of family, trust and revenge in this chilling LA gang narrative.

CUT COPY BOILER ROOM

Dan Whitford broke away from recording Free Your Mind in Melbourne to lay down euphoric dance music for the online institution.

POND - MIDNIGHT MASS (AT MARKET STREET PAYPHONE)

Space oddities Pond took it higher with the melodramatic video for the 'Hobo Rocket' closer.

BENI - LOVE ON THE RUN

House music on the loose with an optical overload from EGO.

REMIXES

TAME IMPALA - BE ABOVE IT (EROL ALKAN REWORK)

Not sure why we sat on this cerebral mix for so long. Maybe too hypnotised to take it to the pressing plant?

HUNTERS & COLLECTORS - TALKING TO A STRANGER (THE AVALANCHES REWORK)

The mighty Avalanches unexpectedly launch a soundcloud account with this charging Aussie disco-punker, triggering all kinds of speculation.

THE PRESETS - FALL (ALAN BRAXE REMIX)

Certainly the most overlooked! Fall into the abyss with Thomas Bangalter's Stardust partner Alan Braxe.

MOVEMENT - US (GIRAFFAGE REMIX)

The San Fran bedroom producer really rang the alarm when asking for the remix parts the day before deadline. No need to sweat. Woozy finger snappin' magik.

SOFTWAR - ONE DAY (DETROIT SWINDLE REMIX)

One of many stellar mixes on our Club Mod imprint. Jazzy house bumpin' in the basement.

COVERS

TAME IMPALA - PROTOTYPE

No dispute about Tame taking the top gong for this one. Smooth as silk. While it's a family affair, Pond's Nick Allbrook steals the show with his on point Andre 3000 impersonation.

CUT COPY - FREE YOUR MIND (SPIRITUALIZED VERSION)

We really netted the big fish on this one. Spiritualized's Jason Pearce used no original parts with this remix, opting to build a lucid cover version from the ground up. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space.

CEO - MY LIQUOR

The Swedish enigma layers this climatic retelling of My Liquor, sans Kanye's parts.

DARKSIDE - PLANET CARAVAN

Lifted from the duo's Boiler Room performance, Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington reinvent the stoner classic.

YOUNG DREAMS - FEELS LIKE WE ONLY GO BACHWARDS

After touring with Tame across UK and Europe, the Norwegian big band delivered their best baroque pop impression. Radiating.

MODCASTS

MODCAST #147: NICK ZINNER

A gentleman of good taste. Bubblegum, reggae and 90's RnB rewinds amongst tributes to Australia's pale saint Rowland S Howard and writing combo Vanda and Young.

MODCAST #165: PSYCHEMAGIK'S SUMMER OF LOVE

Well worn at the office. Could hum every melody on call.

CLUB MODCAST #010: ROLAND TINGS

Club Mod upstart raises the bar with a set of original material recorded live in Berlin during a roaring thunderstorm.

MODCAST #149: KEVIN PARKER'S ISLAND GETAWAY

Kevin makes a great Wilson for island castaways.

MODCAST #153: RAF DADDY

This one is totally off its tree! Reggae, disco-house and Wu-Tang from 1/2 of 2 Bears.

MODCAST #161: SHINE 2009

Shine 2009's Sami Suova flicked through a timeless selection of 90s drum'n'bass, trip hop and r'n'b mixed with modern sensations. 100% taste.
