Modcast #99: Jacques Renault
What to say about Jacques Renault? He knows his music and he knows how to party.
He started out as a post-punk Washington, D.C. native who moved to Chicago to continue his studies of viola, along the line he got into dance music, and moved to New York. As a DJ, his selection and mixing takes is a throw-back to when DJing was a fine art. As a producer his remixes, edits, original tracks have been released on a bunch of labels including DFA, RVNG INTL and Italians Do It Better.
He's taken control of the Modcast this week and turned in a particularly fine selection for your enjoyment. Friends in Brazil and Chile, he's heading your way soon, check the dates below.
Modcast #98: Juan MacLean
John "Juan" MacLean is a busy guy. Since his last full-length album (The Future Will Come) he's been relentlessly touring, guested on a number of other records (including Holy Ghost and Shit Robot's latest offerings), turned out a slew of remixes (apparently there are ones for Yoko Ono + Stevie Nicks in the works too) and is working on a new house project, going under the moniker 'Peach Melba'.
He's now back in the studio with Nancy Whang working on a third full-length Juan MacLean album.
This week he's released a collection of new tracks, remastered favourites and remixes. It's called Everybody Get Close and is out on DFA. Here's a Modcast to mark the occasion.
Video: The Crystal Ark - The City Never Sleeps
Artistic all-star Gavin Russom has been a long time member of the DFA stable as part of Black Meteoric Star and Crystal Ark. His experimentation with the boundaries of conventional composition make for a very raw kind of music that, like tribal drums, reminds us that we're all made of rhythms. His live shows are also as much modern art installations as they are performances.

Not too long ago we prescribed you with Van She's cover of the Blue Oyster Cult classic, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper". But if that fever still persists then we highly recommend that it's about time for your second dosage, in the form of a Holy Ghost! remix of the very same track. As if the original wasn't enough, Holy Ghost! do what they do best and take team Van She's effort and make it their own.
Rumour of the day/week/month: James Murphy wouldn't let Holy Ghost! within an inch of the precious DFA cowbell, so he took a 'personal day and trekked to their studio in Paris to play it himself.

Tip your hats and say hello to Modular's newest family members, the DJ/producer duo Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist, better known as the collective unit, Canyons.
Hailing from Perth but now calling Sydney home, Canyons are more "cool older step-brother" than "creepy uncle" and have been causing ripples in the house music pond with their unique flavour of eclectic genre-defying tunes.
